'He trusted in the Lord'
By Bro. Waymon Stewart
What was the difference between Saul and David? Yes, it is true, Saul was
taller than David. And it is also true, that Saul was God’s anointed one. Let
us look at the real difference between Saul and David.
David acted wisely in all his ways (1 Sam. 18:5, 14). Saul acted foolishly
when he refused to utterly destroy the Amalekites as God had instructed
him. Instead, he saved the best of the sheep and oxen and spared King
Agag. What was his excuse … the people took them and wanted to sacrifice
them to the Lord. In verse 23 of 1 Samuel chapter 15, it reads, “For rebellion
is as the sin of witchcraft and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry.
Because thou has rejected the word of the Lord he hath also so rejected the
word of the Lord he hath also so rejected thee from being King.”
Now, when David accepted the challenge of Goliath, there was no doubt that
he would conquer him. Why? David “trusted in the Lord”, to deliver Goliath up
to him ...
Saul refused to “trust in the Lord” but relied on his own discernment. In doing
the desires of the people, he neglected to obey God’s instructions to the
letter.
Earlier, Saul made the same mistake, when he was instructed to wait on
Samuel at Gilgal. When Samuel had not arrived and the people began to
scatter when they saw the Philistines about to attack them. Saul became
afraid and did not “trust in the Lord” and said, “Bring hither a burnt offering to
me, and a peace offering. And he offered the burnt offering. He was to wait on
Samuel whom God had authorized to make the sacrifice before the Lord.
Again, Saul did not “trust in the Lord.”
When Saul was trying to kill David-he gain failed to “trust in the Lord…” What
difference between David and Saul? David “trusted in the Lord.” Saul trusted
in his own self and not the voice of the Lord.
The lesson that Christians can learn from David is we must “trust in the
Lord.” When, we trust in ourselves, it will bring certain disaster upon
ourselves.
